Surfing the web 2 - Browsers (cont.) by Scott Boyd

This article is continued from Surfing the web 1 - Browsers.

In the previous article we looked at the basics of the address bar and some general information about the World Wide Web.  We will take off from there and cover more of the tools available using Internet Explorer to surf the web.

Standard Buttons

There are 5 standard buttons you should get to know when using a browser:

  • Navigation (Back and Forward)

  • Stop

  • Refresh

  • Home

Standard browser buttons

Navigation

The 2 navigation buttons, Back and Forward, will navigate you between pages you have visited.  Please note, these do not navigate you around a website.  They only take you back to pages you have already been too for the period that the browser has been open.

Stop

This button stops a page loading.  Why you may ask?

Well, if you connection is slow, or you went to a page you didn't want to (clicked the wrong link) then you can stop it loading and save you some time!

Refresh

The refresh button is there so you can refresh the content of the page.  Sometimes pages don't load correctly (things out of place, or images missing - big red X's), so by refreshing it you can effectively "try again".

Tip:  by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking refresh you completely reload a page from scratch.

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP - the people who give you Internet access) will cache pages you visit (they save a copy of them) so when you go back they load quicker.  Now obviously they can't store a copy of every website out there, so sometimes the copy of the site the ISP cache's is out of date.  By Ctrl - Refreshing, you force the ISP to go and get you an up to date copy of the website!

Home

Clicking on the Home button takes you to the page you have set as your homepage - this is the same page that you see when you open your browser.

To select a new homepage:

  • Select the Tools menu in your browser.

  • Select "Internet Options".

  • Under "Homepage" type in the URL (the address) of your desired homepage.

  • Click on "OK" at the bottom right.

Now every time you click on the Home button or open a new browser, you will go to the website you entered the address for.

Favourites

You can keep a list of your favourite web pages using the "Favourites" menu:

Favourites list

By clicking on the "Add" button, you add the page you are currently viewing to your favourites list (the "Organize" button lets you create folders to organise your favourites).

The "Favorites" button with the yellow star is used to toggle your Favorites menu open and close.

Tip:  You can also add a favourite site by selecting the "favorites" menu and clicking on "Add to favorites" (you will also notice that your favourites get displayed in this menu.

Note:  Some sites ask you to "bookmark" them - this is just another term for "adding a favourite".
