Surfing the web 3 - Hyperlinks by Scott Boyd

Hyperlinks (also know as "links") are fundamental to the World Wide Web.  They allow visitors to a website to navigate from page to page easily.

So what is a link?

This is a link (opens in a new window).  It is standard practice for links to be a different colour from the body text of a page (usually blue, but they can be any colour the web designer wants them to be) and for them to be underlined.

It is considered bad practice to have links the same colour and format as body text - after all, how do you know where you are supposed to click?  And I don't know about you, but when I'm reading my page, my mouse is randomly clicking about the place - there is nothing worse than inadvertently leaving what you were reading!

OK so how do you use them?

Well, I assume because you got this far into the web, you know how to click on a link, but just in case you don't:

  • Position the mouse pointer over the link text.

  • Left click to go to the page that the link is pointing to.

  • That's it.

But, there are a few tricks that not everyone knows about links, so I'll cover those too:

1.  If you hover the mouse over the link, the URL of the destination of the link is displayed at the bottom left of your browser (just above the start button):

Link text

2.  If you right click on the link, a menu appears offering you several options:

  • Open (will open page in same window)

  • Copy Shortcut (copies the URL of the destination page to your clipboard so you can paste it elsewhere)

  • Add to favourites

Knowing the basics of hyperlinks will help you navigate the web more efficiently.
