Military career - how to make a career in the militarySo you want a military career huh? Good for you soldier! Huh? You don't want to be a soldier? Um well.....that's OK too!
The modern military career Perhaps the common (mis)conception of a military career is that you have to be a solider. That isn't the case anymore.
The modern military is a diverse organisation and recognises the need for numerous different roles supporting the front line troops. Admin, doctors, engineers, mechanics, human resources, officers, construction, IT, marketing and many other disciplines are put to use within the military.
So where does this leave the job seeker? Well, a military career isn't as simple as it once was. The opportunities are as diverse as the larger job market is, so that still leaves the job seeker with decisions to make about what it is they want to do with their career.
But fear not, because help is at hand!
The US military for example, offer a testing feature via their website which allows job seekers to test their skills. The ASVAB Career Exploration Program is "nationally normed multiaptitude test battery developed and maintained by the Department of Defense" (source: US Military Careers website)
The UK military on the other hand, offer an interactive online chat session so you can discuss life in the army and find out a bit more information about your military career, as well as having a useful online jobs wizard to find out what you would be good at. Some fun little Flash games too! :)
Modern military careers generally have good benefits packages and healthcare, and although the obvious hazards of the job are there, the life of a military career isn't as extreme as one might imagine.
The US military career website offers comprehensive details of the benefits of a military career, from on the job skills training to further education.
Certainly a career in the army isn't for everyone - but there is a much wider scope of careers available than many people realise. Definitely worth a look, even if you're just checking out the career tests and games! ;)
