Truck driving jobs - on the road with trucking jobs!

Truck driving jobs - on the road with trucking jobs!

Ah yeh, it must be an easy life if you have a truck driving job huh?  Just cruise along open highways without a care in the world?

Sorry, no - trucking jobs just ain't like that!

Aside from the obvious stresses of driving long distances and spending prolonged time away from your friends and family, truck drivers have other issues to contend with as well.

For example, even though a truck driver may seem to have a great view from up in his cab, the reality of the situation is that he has a limited view of the road behind and to the side of him.  This makes truck driving jobs both stressful and dangerous - sometimes all they can see of the car behind is a shadow on the road following them!

So trucking jobs require the driver to be especially aware of the traffic around him - more so than regular drivers, who rarely realise that cutting out from behind a truck can be very dangerous - the truck driver needs to be thinking for other drivers as well as himself!

Trucking driving licences

In the UK, the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) distribute licences required for truck driving jobs (LGV - Large Goods Vehicle licence).  The procedure is pretty much the same as for a regular car licence.

First you apply for your provisional LGV licence from the DVLA, then take lessons from a qualified instructor.  When you are ready, you can sit your practical and theory tests.

In the US, having your GED is helpful to start off (not required, but a percentage of truck driving jobs desire it).  With this and a clean driving record (DUI convictions can disqualify you from a job as a truck driver) you can obtain a Commercial driving Licence (which requires passing a written and driving exam).

Finally, US truck drivers must pass the FMCSR (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations) exam every 2 years in order to retain their status.  This includes a written test and physical examination (hearing, vision).

All the best in finding your truck driving job!
