Default Can anyone recommend a CV writing company?

Hi, sorry if this has been asked before but I was wondering whether anyone knows of any good organisations that can write a good CV? I have had the same CV for a couple of years now, I have tried to modify it but I have never received an interview from it and am getting desperate to have it improved. Thanks for any input.

Homer there are lots and lots on the internet.

Some are dirt cheap -avoid these.

Some are in my view too expensive avoid these.

My view - to get a good CV you should not pay more than £150 max.

Less than £100 I'd probably give them a miss. I offer CV writing as well as marketing consultancy.

Your CV has to really sell you, you need to give the employer reasons to employ you.

Its not enough to just list experience.

First read of a CV is only ever a skim read so make your CV look easy to read.

Grab their attention straight away with relevant achievements at the top of the first page.

If what the employer is looking for is hidden away in long winded paragraphs 3/4 s of the way down the page you have lost.

IF you'd like email your CV to I will give you a genuine opinion.
Unlike some services if there are just a few tweaks you could do yourself I'll say so.

Be wary many CV writers are in my view little more than con artists who will trash every single CV they see.

As with most things on the internet there are some good guys but for every one good guy there are ten con artists. Where are you based as I tend to meet people face to face if they are in my area.

Many of them come from a HR or recruitment consultant background.

My background is marketing, think about it who's bets qualified to sell you? Whih is effectively what your CV has to do.

All the best

Michael

I have been writing CVs for a living for over 20 years but I am semi-retired. Most of the other people who claim to be CV writers have been doing it for less than a year and even some of the big companies farm all the work out to students.

You get what you pay for in this as in everything else and all industries are full of upstarts, con men, people who are only in it for the money.... Be careful and PM me if you really want a private recommendation.

Hi, thanks to both of you for your replies, I have had my CV written by a company before and I was not very impressed thus I am a bit apprehensive about the whole situation. I am going to post my CV and I would be grateful if you could provide some feedback. I will either post it or e mail it to both of you. Thanks for your help

Hi Homer,

I see everyone telling you that if it's cheap, then you shouldn't use it...I believe in quality before quantity. To me, it's about getting more bang for buck, even if the buck is not big...I've seen people charge almost $350 for CV and they turn out like crap. But it's up to you to decide....what you need is an eye catching, yet professional, polished CV that will allow you to stand out and get noticed for your professional experience.

I do compose and help others with CV's, resumes, career coaching, and things like that. I can help you critique it, but it's definitely worth going to someone you trust...but don't let anyone convince you that cheap (or for a better word, affordable) = low quality. Not true...

I was getting no hits on my resume for 9 months. Finally, I took the advice of a friend and hired a professional. Smartest thing I have done so far in my job search. I have gotten four responses in the last couple of weeks (not bad in this economy). More than anything, it has boosted my confidence and has reinvigorated my job search. Now, I am motivated to get active on job forums (like this one) in order to network and share ideas.

That's WONDERFUL....hits or callbacks are always good and regains that self-esteem that are often drained during a job search. Most people ignore the fact that they need a professional, but if it boosts your chances, why not?

Not everyone does, its just practice, once you know how to construct an interview winning CV the best person to construct it is actually yourself.

Should you or shouldn't you pay?

Well, if you're good at writing or can, at least, seek the advice of people who are, then why pay at all? However, if you're not a good writer and can't draw on support, then is it really worth not paying and putting your career at risk?

Professional CV writers not only have an enormous amount of experience to draw on, they can also bring objectivity to the party, 'stand back' from your CV and see the bigger picture. Those of us who are professional, will also know how to edit ruthlessly (where needed) draw out key information and make the CV really stand out.

Be warned though: There are plenty of cowboys out there! There are some who will mercilessly chase you with cold calls and basically try to frighten you into buying a CV. Others will charge exhorbitant fees. I've seen some asking for FOUR figures!!!! No justification for that at all. High price does not mean high quality.

On the other hand, if you're only paying, say, £25, all they will do is chop your old CV around and then give it a few new buzz words.

At Dazzling CVs, we will give you a detailed questionnaire to complete and then follow up with a 1-2-1 telephone interview. You're then able to access unlimited amends up to 7 days afterwards. The cost? Probably not as much as you think.

Anyway, if you would like a free and no-obligation review, please send your CV to us via http://tinymailto.com/review4free or visit our site and use the 'Contact Us' button.

It certainly sounds like a confidence boost for you. Good luck with your search
