I work for a company that provides online job search support to professionals - currently delivered in conjunction with Jobcentre Plus. We've learned a lot from our members about what tools can best aid a jobseeker and it seems the most important thing is that these can be completely personalised.
As such, we're looking to develop a new, completely customisable online product (think BBC/iGoogle) - a page which features a number of job hunting tools streamed straight to you and featuring only relevant information. If you had such a tool, what would you want it to feature? What kind of information would you like to have at your fingertips when job hunting? In fact, would such a thing be beneficial at all, or are there other ways you prefer to manage your job search? Any feedback will be gratefully received, I'm really fascinated to hear more about what tools can provide real benefits... I look forward to reading your thoughts. Bea |

There are many job searching sites. What tools are you trying to develop?

Hi Robert, thanks for getting back to me. Our current site combines a customisable training course supplemented by tools including a business intelligence service, vacancy aggregator and networking advice. We believe that these can be made much more personal (and therefore more beneficial), hence the new project. What I'm keen to know is whether there's anything lacking in current online offerings available to jobseekers. So, if we could provide relevant vacancy feeds, news feeds and business intelligence would you feel fully equipped to embark on a job hunt or would there be something missing that could really make a difference?

i think more or less, everyone out there has tried all sorts of things to make it easier for job seekers, and the tools are nothing unique, its just everyone claims to be innovative

In terms of job search tools most seem to take the same format, searching by keyword, location, salary, career level etc.
The more complex tools are around career search i.e. tools which help you to decide what you want to do before you actually search for a job. There are a number of these tools around some quite unreliable but there are several which are well respected and used by the employment, HR and careers guidance community. They generally either take the form of a psychometric profile tool with limited transparency as to the results or interest and skill inventory. However the common factor is that in most cases the most successful ones have been developed over a long period. I hope this helps |
