Article

Yes, I know what you're thinking!

He's at it again!  He isn't going to let it go!

But no.

In retrospect of my experience with Monster Jobs a few months ago (see this article: Monster Jobs - My experience with them!), I thought I would give them another chance and have another look at the site.  They are the worlds leading career network after all!

And there have been some changes.

The first I noticed was that as you log on, the advice section is more clearly visible.  This is a great improvement on before!  This way more people can get the answers they want without waiting for a reply on the forum.

But back on to my old hunting ground:

The Jobseekers Forum

AAAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!

What have they done to it?

34 posts in total (OK 29, there are a few duplicates), and only 7 have been responded to in a fortnight.  None in the past 5 days.

Now I know I messed around a bit on the forum, but at least I was there every day answering posts and helping people out.  Rich too.

It really sickens me that a company that claims to be the world's leading career network puts so little emphasis on the jobseeker.

I am not claiming that this site is perfect, but we at least answer all the posts on the forum if we can, and there is some decent information kicking about the articles section.  All this on a site that is run part time!

And a bit of a petty web design gripe - their main banner on the page doesn't load.

Onwards to the other forums!

A quick overview of the forums I looked at (you know, the ones who have "experts" on them), these are the stats for the first page of each:

  • Human Resources - last 12 posts unanswered

  • Sales and Marketing - about 50% of posts unanswered (couldn't be bothered counting them all!)

  • Technology - most posts answered (nice one "the expert"!)

  • Career Development - about 30-40% answered - none by an expert - all by users.

  • CV Forum - 100% answered!  Good old Steve Holmes!  I've added a link to his site in our resources section!

  • Interviews - about 50% (only about 4 posts by "interview expert" though).

  • Jobseekers Help Expert Forum (the expert is the guy that banned me...) only 3 posts in 2 months! lol

It should be noted that this is only a sample of the forums that Monster Jobs have and these stats would fluctuate daily, but are accurate as at 17th December 2002.

The fly in the ointment

Yeh, another one.

Only this one is a big one.

I went to the Monster Poll forum where people can discuss the current topic of the survey.

It is full of racist comments and sick jokes.

All of these were posted at least 3 or 4 days ago, so there has been plenty of time to remove them.

Solution?

I felt the last issue there needed addressing as soon as possible and the others too in the longer term.

So I contacted Monster and asked for some comments on these points.

Here is the email I sent to their press officer (monsterpressoffice@miller.shandwick.com) and to Mark Mills, Jobseekers Help Expert (userservices@monster.co.uk):

Hi

I am webmaster of www.jobseekersadvice.com and you recently banned me from your site.

I did a little write up of the experience for my site (which my logs tell me at least one or two of your employees visit, so I'll skip the link).

That was a few months ago and I thought I would give the site another chance.

So I re-registered and I was horrified to see the condition that the site was in.

The most pressing matter I feel is that your Monster Poll forum is littered with racist, sick and offensive comments. I have several thousand visitors to my site each month, who I am sure would all like to know why the "worlds leading career network" is not taking more responsibility in maintaining its site.

Please can you provide us with your official position on this?

Also, the remainder of your forums (with a few exceptions - sales and marketing and CV advice) are also poorly maintained, but don't seem to be suffering the same abuse as the poll forum.

FYI, this information and a copy of this email will be published on my site as you receive this email, and we will all be eagerly awaiting your response to be published with it.

Please can you issue your official position on this matter, as I really do not want to offer a one sided view to my visitors.

Thank you.

Kind Regards

ps I noticed that your Monster banner graphic fails to load on most of the forum pages. It might just be my connection, but if not you may want to get that fixed. :)

UPDATE:  No response from my emails, but their forums were cleaned up over the next couple of days!

Regards
